The MMA is one of the fastest growing martial arts program. The ever-growing popularity of MMA has provided American soldiers with more access to training in mixed martial arts and ground fighting. Although the situations presented in a MMA training setting are not life threatening, many of the elements of conditioning and the foundation of the sport do translate into combat self-defense.

Krav Maga, an Israeli reality based system, translating into ‘contact combat’, cleverly integrates the best techniques from various martial arts for the sole purpose of self-defense. It is accessible to soldiers and law enforcement stateside, and even the guys involved in Forex Trading! Its application takes on a very different look than its civilian program, which is available all over the United States. The United States military provides its own hand-to-hand-combat training program that bring mixed martial arts directly to the soldier while serving. These systems are well-organized and deal with self-defense with combative gear on and attacks with knife, hand guns, automatic weapons and riffles. One program is offered Through the United States Army.

The Army Combatives Program offers an efficient experience in combatives, giving soldiers MMA training and fighting experience. The Army’s program is helping to maintain an evolving set ofskills for soldiers beyond their basic training. It also helps to foster a continued interest in MMA training while between tours. If soldiers maintain their fighting skills and conditioning while at home, it benefits their entire mental and physical being if deployed back into the field.

The Army’s Combat Training program has a large number of soldiers enrolling to gain a set of mixed martial arts skills. The program is known to help build battlefield confidence and its advancement system allows various levels of soldiers to train while creating goals that provide motivation. One of our US Army’s training officers has shared with me that, “We aren’t going to win the next war because we are better at hand to hand combat, but we will win because of our willingness to close the distance and engage in close combat with the enemy. I think the Army Combatives program fosters a warrior spirit and forms a decent foundation to ground grappling, moving to more advanced skills of Muay Thai and Kali. ” An important design element of the Army’s program is that is must be able to train 30-100 soldiers at one time. They focus on breaking down steps very simply so that survival under press are in the forefront during a combative attack. The mixed martial arts that are part of this program also serve t
o relieve stress while still teaching soldiers how to monopolize on the surge of adrenaline that occurs when under stress and faced with aggression.

Another recently returned soldier who served two tours in Afghanistan enjoyed his time in the Army’s Combative Training program. Since returning to Chicago, he has sought out MMA training to keep in shape and fine-tune his skills, anticipating a return to the Middle East. He enjoyed how the program was organized, offering him three levels of combatives. ” It gave me a combination of BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and wrestling, then we ended with MMA as the more advanced level. In the basic training they train us with boxing, bayonet and some BJJ. For me it was valuable because it gave me physical hardiness and conditioning along with the mentality of combat, taking someone down and actually finishing them. Only MMA continues to give you that opportunity.”

The phenomenal rise to popularity of mixed martial arts is the main reason why more and more individuals want to learn the various MMA fighting techniques. However, only a few spend time in discovering how successful MMA warriors started out their career on the Octagon. If you are a beginner, it is important to note that there are various approaches that you have to consider if you want to become a full-fledged MMA fighter. In fact, most of the approaches that were adopted by renowned MMA fighters are also accessible to most beginners.

There are many options that you can adopt in your effort to become a skilled and effective MMA fighter. The most common and popular way to become a mixed martial artist is by becoming an expert on one or more forms of martial arts. Although you would need to have the necessary skills on a wide range of disciplines, being an expert on a particular fighting skill will make your transition from a single-discipline martial artist to a competent MMA fighter a lot easier. This type of learning approach was quite common during the early days of mixed martial arts, where in most cases, MMA upstarts will stick to a particular MMA fighting style to prove its effectiveness and superiority over the other fighting styles. Watching MMA videos online can also help you to learn if you have money to spend.

Most of the marquee warriors on the octagon have started out by entering the MMA amateur circuit. This has been the route of most professional MMA fighters today. Their primary aim in joining the amateur ranks is to sharpen their skills and endurance before they enter the more competitive MMA professional circuit. Just like in other sports, amateur fights are not paid, and the fight record is not carried when you turn professional. This is one of the reasons why most fighters prefer to take this route as they are given some leeway to commit mistakes and get a taste of losing bouts. It is during their stint as an amateur fighter that they are able to hone their fighting skills and learn from their mistakes before they finally make the jump for the professional circuit.

A third approach is turning to be the most highly preferred approach to becoming a full-fledged MMA fighter these days, and this focuses on cross training. Its main objective is to go through one of these programs by fighting on local shows before moving up to the professional ranks. In most instances, these programs are managed by professional MMA fighters such as the Miletech fighting systems, which is owned and managed by Pat Miletech.

In more than 2000 years, you will think that many things have changed already. Although, it seems that when it comes to sports, modern practices actually have resemblance to ancient ones. Well this is particularly evident with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), United States’ increasingly popular sport today. In either way you might refer to it, Ultimate Fighting or Mixed Martial arts; this is in fact a contemporary form already. Taking a closer look, MMA pound for pound in fact resemble an Ancient Geek competitive sport referred to as pankration. This kind of sport puts together Greco-Roman wrestling together with a series of martial arts fighting techniques.

Pankration can be traced backed to 648 B.C. During that time, it was newly introduced sport in the Olympics. Just like MMA pound for pound today, the rules and regulations in pankration also apply. For instance, biting as well as eye gouging is also prohibited in this sport. Apart from these two foul plays, anything else is allowable in pankration just like in MMA. Pankration is a combination of two Greek words: pan which means “all”; and kratos which means “powers.” Most of the time, pankration matches can last for hours with certain results leading to the death of one or even both of the fighters. Because of brutal nature and the strength of fighters exhibited, it quickly turned out as the most popular sport in the Olympics.

Unfortunately, the popular of pankration decline when the Roman Empire rose to power. During this time, other sports were introduced to the people and to different sporting events that pankration slowly lost hold of its popularity. In the contemporary Western World, it was wrestling and boxing which took the interests of people traditional martial arts steadily gained popularity in the East.

When the 1900s cane, Brazilian Carlos Gracie, who known to have an extensive training background in judo and learned under the care of well-known Japanese champion Mitsuyo Maeda, started training his four brothers the very skill that he learned previously. In the year 1925, Gracie together with his younger brother Helio relocated to Rio de Janeiro. The two brothers decided to put up a jiu-jitsu studio and later on came up with the “Gracie Challenge.” This served as a challenge to those who want to compete or fight against the two siblings. Which started as way attracting attention to their only just opened academy, the Gracie Challenge was able to draw fighters in several different disciplines and that is from boxing, martial arts, karate, capoeira (a form of Afro-Brazilian fighting) and even wrestling.

Soon, a considerable number of fighters joined these matches bring along with them a relatively huge number of spectators. Afterwards, the matches were flocked with so many people it had to be done in larger areas like the Brazilian soccer arenas. Ultimately, the sport steadily became Brazil’s second most well-liked sport after soccer. It was in the year 1993 when MMA pound for pound finally reached new heights. With the establishment of Ultimate Fighting Championship, the sport has finally made its mark worldwide.

Just like the old saying “mind over matter”, most fights are not won just by physical strength, it in fact the mind which drives most fighters to win. Consequently, true strength accompanies by a distinctive training can help a person win a match. A proper mindset is important considering that you have to continuously condition your body so that strength is sustained and the body is constantly in its best condition.

Although Bruce Lee may be considered rather small as compared to other known fighters all over the world, it cannot be denied that he is in fact one of the finest. Bruce gained this recognition and won matches not because he is considered as the physically strongest but in fact he was the most controlled and strategic of them all. A lot of fighters tend to get emotional when they are in a fight, however, this is just simply the biggest mistake that they will ever do. When a fighter lets his emotions take control of him, thought process and judgment tend to get disrupted and this can only risk the fighter into losing the battle.

Muhammad Ali was also well-known for his trash talking episodes. Ali did not just do such in order to gain attention from the public and the media, the idea behind is that he was trying to provoke his opponent’s emotions. The famous boxer came up with a strategy referred to as the "rope a dope." In this strategy, Ali will play possum and then allow the fighter to wail on him whereas he leans on the rope. This play will give the opponent over confidence letting them exhaust all of their energy during the initial rounds. Once his opponents tires out, Ali will come to attack his opponent exerting little effort to tackle him down.
When this happens, it is guaranteed that the fight is a win. Thus for most MMA fighters, it is always a must to fight strategically instead of charging the opponent based on emotional outburst. Trainers and fighters a like are realizing more and more the potential of concentration and strategic thinking.

MMA is not just a sport to watch, it also offers people the option of a completely new workout. MMA trainings are considered one of the best in the planet. Since MMA fighters have to be physically strong, the trainings in MMA are specifically designed to improve overall athletic ability. From endurance to stamina and physical strength, MMA training is good for everyone.

With the continuous development of the art of fighting in MMA, so is the training for this sport. Since the potential of strategic thinking is more and more recognized in the field, MMA trainings nowadays also features trainings that help synchronize the body with one’s mind. MMA trainings also help trainees get hold of their emotion and focus on certain strategies to gain advantage in the match. With obvious physical benefits, people can not only enjoy watching MMA but it can also be a worthwhile workout.

An essential component of MMA training is the clothes used for training. Naturally, it is not advisable to use clothes that are ill-fitted when training. The fitting of the t-shirt to be used during training is very crucial. It should not be loose or very tight. When it comes to shorts for training, it should also be able to fit one’s body appropriately. The shorts should allow for flexibility particularly when punching or kicking.

What appeared to be an ordinary boxing match in ESPN until players started kicking each other is in fact the one of the most recent and increasingly popular sports today. Although mixed martial arts (MMA) may appear to be a new sport, it in fact has been around back in 648 BC during the Olympic Games.

MMA matches

There are three different phases of fighting in mixed martial arts and these are: stand-up, clinch and ground.
In stand-up fighting, this phase includes kickboxing, boxing, along with Muay Thai. During the clinch phase, on the other hand, Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, Judo and even Sambo are all used. Meanwhile, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu (with emphasis on positioning), catch wrestling, shoot wrestling, Sambo and Judo determines the ground phase of this sport.

Aside from the different phases of fighting, there are also several fighting techniques that can be observed from MMA. MMA fighting techniques also use: punches, kicks, knees, sweeps, some elbowing, takedowns, pinning holds, throws, and even hand-to-hand combat. The winner for every MMA match is determined through a judge’s decision. Usually, the matches for MMA are time bound meaning decisions are made after the time for each match has passed. On other hand, there are instances wherein matches may be stopped even before the allotted time has passed, some conditions which can end a fight are: fight doctor recommendation, referee’s stoppage decision, knockout, submission, and when the cornerman finally throws in the towel.

MMA at present

Mixed martial arts at present make use of different fighting techniques, which are in fact combinations of several professional fighting styles. Most of the time, fighters in mixed martial arts are already trained in a specific fighting style and they eventually establish their careers in MMA when they venture more into other types of fighting. MMA has several fighting styles and these are: clinch-and-pound, sprawl-and-brawl, and ground-and-pound. These fighting styles are further discusses below:

Clinch-and pound make use of clinch fighting methods generally differentiated by a clinch hold. In this type of fighting style, the fighter holds his opponent in place making sure that they are immobilized. When the opponent is already immobilized, the fighter then will try to attack his opponent’s body using several dirty boxing moves or simple his knee. Fighters who usually use this fighting style have started training on wrestling before they ventured into other techniques like boxing.

Sprawl-and-brawl can be classified under the stand-up fighting approach. This kind of technique makes use of striking. Sprawl and brawl tries to avoid ground fight. Fighters who use this kind of fighting style have extensive background in kickboxing or boxing.

Ground-and-pound is a kind of fighting style which focuses on throwing and taking down of an opponent. This technique attempts to gain advantage by taking the dominant position and releasing several strikes.

With the seemingly limitless types of fighting combinations used in MMA, it may appear as though a fighter can do anything against his opponent. That is not the case. There are several things which MMA regulations prohibit and these are: eye gouge, head-butt, pull the hair, attack the groin, bite, etc.

One thing that we cannot tend to forget is the fact that the MMA Pound for Pound that we are enjoying today is the modern ideology and there are several other aspects that connect to it from other martial arts. There were many additions and deletions in the way the game was played. There are hence two distinct types of styles that we observe- One which is passed by the traditional martial arts and the other which are hybrid and discovered in today’s era.
Specialization in any particular martial arts requires complete training to master the art and in case of MMA Pound for Pound where there are many martial arts combined- training in all of them is required to play the game effectively. The following list throws some light on the various styles and their usages.

Stand Up: This is more of knee work, foot movement and punching styles and kicking as used in boxing/ kick boxing, Karate and so on. These are traditional and the modern way of stand up technique would be Sprawl and Brawl. In this technique the person stands up and strikes in order to avoid ground fighting by using sprawls. This is more of a grappling technique or a defending act. This is usually done by a basic boxer and wrestler who is trained in order to escape from takedowns.

Clinching Techniques: Clinching, takedowns and throws are mainly used in events like judo and types of wrestling where we would usually see one person throwing the other down and take him down and sit on him to gain advantage over the other.

This in modern day is more known as ground and pound which involves a similar fashion where the opponent is taken down with a throw and then is attacked primarily with fists in order to gain victory or make the other submissive. This is also mainly used technique in wrestling as a strong action against submissions holds. Though not widely practiced in the earlier days- ground and pound is one of the primary techniques used in MMA Pound for pound and has become an essential part of training today.

Ground Techniques- Ground control skills are highly required to achieve submissions holds and also defend against the same when your opponent makes use of it. In the modern day MMA Pound for Pound this is more referred to as Submissions Grappling techniques where in the take down happens as in the clinching technique but then post that the opponent tries to put pressure on the person beneath him forcing him to submit. The counter action to this is most often where the defendant tries to pull the other on to the ground in order to get an advantage over him.

If you observe in the above mentioned techniques- they resemble to the traditional techniques in many ways but then there were certain disadvantages in all traditional forms. For instance in kick boxing we had the disadvantage that there were no effective counteractions to leg kicks and so on and so forth. In MMA Pound for Pound we will find that one martial art’s disadvantage is being overcome by a technique from another martial art which makes the sport complete.

Did you that MMA players did not come out of somewhere and were physically trained and coached for this purpose. If you are a regular match follower you would notice that you get to see the same face in and out of the fighting area. This is because most of the top players today come from a certain set of institutions or training academies that particularly specialize in training people for more than one martial art.
There are several that even give tips on the kind of diet and exercise that you would need to go through to become a distinguished MMA pound for Pound fighter. You will be amazed to see that these are former champions and celebrities sharing their secret of success to bring up new faces.

The other type of training includes more attention to footwork- it is known that if you do not have a quick move around then it might be impossible for one to play his opponent effectively. Sandbags are effective training utilities that will be much stronger than your opponents- specifically used to help in dragging and pinning down an opponent. Sprinting speed is one quick action that will keep your opponent down. The faster you are the stronger will be the blow and the effect. Continuous exercise is necessary and you will always have to have the energy so that you are strong even till the last round of the game.

As any other game, play or fight goes even MMA Pound for Pound have results that are declared towards the end of the game. Well without that there could be no interest to a fight at all. Did you keep biting your nails to see who the winner of a wonderful fight is? In that case it is necessary to understand how someone was termed as winner. Here are some quick glimpses towards the different types of wins that a fighter could have over his opponent.

The decision is usually given by a jury consisting of at least three people in MMA Pound for Pound fights. This differs from one organization to the other and also differs on the length of time that is used to fight. This is just one way to end the fight. There could also be stoppages that force the fight to be stopped and the result being announced. Some of them are

Knockout- This is in case if one player becomes unconscious- the fight is stopped and the other is declared as the winner. This is also done to prevent further damage to the unconscious player.

Submission- As the word goes in this case one player accepts submission as he is tired- this is more like an acceptance of self defeat. This is done through gestures by wither tapping on the opponents body or the mat or by a verbal note.

Technical Knockout: This has various types. This generally means that this has the intervention of the referee or the doctor due to certain reasons. Some common reasons are listed below:

Referee Intervention: a referee of the match may intervene if he sees prospective damage being caused to one player ad feels that the he is not able to defend himself against it.

One of the participants appears to be unconscious and is not completely unconscious though probably because of a blow from the other fighter.

One of the fighters has a severe injury that could even be a cut or a fracture.

A doctor’s intervention could also result in the game being ended. Usually when one of the players seems to be severely damaged but is not accepting failure- the referee calls for a time out during which the doctor examines the hurt fighter and decides whether the match could continue or not. In such situations it is also examined to see if the injury is natural or from unaccepted actions from the opponent. This could also result in disqualification or no consent accordingly. The corner men belonging to one of the teams could also stop the match by throwing a towel either during the match or during the break times.

The match could also be ended in the way of a forfeit where one of the fighters accepts defeat even before the game is played. No consent is declared when there is an unacceptable act by both of the fighters and there is a serious injury caused because of this. A disqualification also happens because of an illegitimate technique or an unacceptable action by one of the fighters.

We all know that UFC was the basic founder of MMA Pound for Pound and today this is being dealt with many more organizations and not just the Ultimate Fighting Championship. UFC was earlier banned due to its rules of brutality which were later reorganized and phrased and gave the world a new picture. Today MMA Pound for Pound does not remain a sport alone. Its influence in the market outside is so high that there are various other things that are pinned to it. What we see today from an outer world is just the players, the matches and the results and the ranks. But there is more to it.

With the promoters bringing it under a big banner to get more collections and have more people walk in there is huge amount of finance that goes in and comes out. Just like how a movie has producers and people advertising for the same, MMA also has its own set of marketing and advertising strategy. In addition to all this there are online bets for each game that happens. These matches are live telecasted on paid cable connections and are popularly viewed by the viewers through it.

This is not all- we have several websites, forums, blogs, magazines, writers who keep writing and discussing about the up to date MMA Pound for Pound related activities. Though the attires for the fighters are just shorts, there is much more promotional stuff like shirts, wrist bands that keep going round in the market. We have the posters of the MMA top players being sold crazy and T shirts coming with their pictures imprinted.
Looking at it in an optimistic sense we see that a simple game is giving job opportunities to various people including the stadium staff to the youngsters who give away flyers on the upcoming events in MMA. There would certainly be card collections happening among students and teenagers with the information about their favorite fighter and their pictures being published. Not all would be able to watch these matches live and many of these and in fact all of the past matches are available recorded in one website or the other giving its viewers the option to watch it over and over again at their convenient time.

Well the way the economy is today it is happy to see such interesting sportive stuff like MMA Pound for Pound getting the required attention and attraction and helping the economy to grow in its own little way. If you ever want to know how popular MMA is – all you have to do is to drop the 3 letters “MMA’ on a popular search engine and the results might either surprise you or shock you. Change is the spice of life and is probably the only constant thing that exists in this world. People were tired of the traditional events like boxing and wrestling which gave ride to the event what we call today as “MMA Pound for Pound”. Who knows that probably 5 years down the lane when this has become common people will look forward to a newer style of the game that impresses them more.
