Just like the old saying “mind over matter”, most fights are not won just by physical strength, it in fact the mind which drives most fighters to win. Consequently, true strength accompanies by a distinctive training can help a person win a match. A proper mindset is important considering that you have to continuously condition your body so that strength is sustained and the body is constantly in its best condition.

Although Bruce Lee may be considered rather small as compared to other known fighters all over the world, it cannot be denied that he is in fact one of the finest. Bruce gained this recognition and won matches not because he is considered as the physically strongest but in fact he was the most controlled and strategic of them all. A lot of fighters tend to get emotional when they are in a fight, however, this is just simply the biggest mistake that they will ever do. When a fighter lets his emotions take control of him, thought process and judgment tend to get disrupted and this can only risk the fighter into losing the battle.

Muhammad Ali was also well-known for his trash talking episodes. Ali did not just do such in order to gain attention from the public and the media, the idea behind is that he was trying to provoke his opponent’s emotions. The famous boxer came up with a strategy referred to as the "rope a dope." In this strategy, Ali will play possum and then allow the fighter to wail on him whereas he leans on the rope. This play will give the opponent over confidence letting them exhaust all of their energy during the initial rounds. Once his opponents tires out, Ali will come to attack his opponent exerting little effort to tackle him down.
When this happens, it is guaranteed that the fight is a win. Thus for most MMA fighters, it is always a must to fight strategically instead of charging the opponent based on emotional outburst. Trainers and fighters a like are realizing more and more the potential of concentration and strategic thinking.

MMA is not just a sport to watch, it also offers people the option of a completely new workout. MMA trainings are considered one of the best in the planet. Since MMA fighters have to be physically strong, the trainings in MMA are specifically designed to improve overall athletic ability. From endurance to stamina and physical strength, MMA training is good for everyone.

With the continuous development of the art of fighting in MMA, so is the training for this sport. Since the potential of strategic thinking is more and more recognized in the field, MMA trainings nowadays also features trainings that help synchronize the body with one’s mind. MMA trainings also help trainees get hold of their emotion and focus on certain strategies to gain advantage in the match. With obvious physical benefits, people can not only enjoy watching MMA but it can also be a worthwhile workout.

One thing that we cannot tend to forget is the fact that the MMA Pound for Pound that we are enjoying today is the modern ideology and there are several other aspects that connect to it from other martial arts. There were many additions and deletions in the way the game was played. There are hence two distinct types of styles that we observe- One which is passed by the traditional martial arts and the other which are hybrid and discovered in today’s era.
Specialization in any particular martial arts requires complete training to master the art and in case of MMA Pound for Pound where there are many martial arts combined- training in all of them is required to play the game effectively. The following list throws some light on the various styles and their usages.

Stand Up: This is more of knee work, foot movement and punching styles and kicking as used in boxing/ kick boxing, Karate and so on. These are traditional and the modern way of stand up technique would be Sprawl and Brawl. In this technique the person stands up and strikes in order to avoid ground fighting by using sprawls. This is more of a grappling technique or a defending act. This is usually done by a basic boxer and wrestler who is trained in order to escape from takedowns.

Clinching Techniques: Clinching, takedowns and throws are mainly used in events like judo and types of wrestling where we would usually see one person throwing the other down and take him down and sit on him to gain advantage over the other.

This in modern day is more known as ground and pound which involves a similar fashion where the opponent is taken down with a throw and then is attacked primarily with fists in order to gain victory or make the other submissive. This is also mainly used technique in wrestling as a strong action against submissions holds. Though not widely practiced in the earlier days- ground and pound is one of the primary techniques used in MMA Pound for pound and has become an essential part of training today.

Ground Techniques- Ground control skills are highly required to achieve submissions holds and also defend against the same when your opponent makes use of it. In the modern day MMA Pound for Pound this is more referred to as Submissions Grappling techniques where in the take down happens as in the clinching technique but then post that the opponent tries to put pressure on the person beneath him forcing him to submit. The counter action to this is most often where the defendant tries to pull the other on to the ground in order to get an advantage over him.

If you observe in the above mentioned techniques- they resemble to the traditional techniques in many ways but then there were certain disadvantages in all traditional forms. For instance in kick boxing we had the disadvantage that there were no effective counteractions to leg kicks and so on and so forth. In MMA Pound for Pound we will find that one martial art’s disadvantage is being overcome by a technique from another martial art which makes the sport complete.

We all know the story behind the evolution of the game MMA but we also need to remember that for the game to become popular there were fighters required. Initially the fighters in the MMA Pound for Pound Fights were not completely trained or ready for multiple martial arts but were ready to try their hands on it. They would still end up exhibiting more of their traditional game styles rather than the MMA flavor.

In other words, initially when a match used to happen between a boxer and a wrestler- one could easily see that the wrestler would adapt to wrestling techniques and the boxer to his traditional boxing techniques. It was later that they realized the necessity of cross training in all martial arts to ensure that the players or the fighters stay on the top of the list. There is very old story related to Karate- it is the story where a handicapped person (who does not have his left arm) goes to famous Japan Karate Master and asks him to coach him. The master not wanting to disappoint the students accepts him and teaches him just one step. The student keeps practicing the same day in and day out and then finally one day the student asks the teacher as to why he just taught him that single step to which the master replies that in Karate the only counteraction to that action is to hold your left arm which you do not have. This could have worked in those days but then in MMA where actions and counteractions belong to more than on martial arts it is necessary that he knows and is trained on all the styles simultaneously.

With the evolution of MMA Pound for Pound happening, the players started using their own styles of fighting and defending. People witnessed a few becoming successful and a few others fail. But over the course of time there were three styles that stood out and started attracting other players to follow it. The three styles were amateur wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling. These paid more attention to grappling techniques which could not be endured by the striking ones. With each of them strong in different styles like standing, clinching and grounding- the generation saw the rise of the unique one in all style for MMA Pound for Pound. This in turn led to the requirement of coaches and trainers and training institutes to help newcomers and amateurs to master the style required for MMA right from the beginning of their training.

In the later days even women entered the field of MMA Pound for Pound and Christiane “Cybog” Santos becoming the first ever Strike force’s women champion. This even was between Santos and the famous personality Gina Carano. Though there are very few women athletes in the MMA Pound for Pound – the awareness has been increasing to have a larger number of participants coming in and enrolling themselves. Currently there are few organizations in the USA that accept women in MMA but then they are bound to increase as time goes.
