What appeared to be an ordinary boxing match in ESPN until players started kicking each other is in fact the one of the most recent and increasingly popular sports today.  Although mixed martial arts (MMA) may appear to be a new sport, it in fact has been around back in 648 BC during the Olympic Games.

MMA matches

There are three different phases of fighting in mixed martial arts and these are: stand-up, clinch and ground.
In stand-up fighting, this phase includes kickboxing, boxing, along with Muay Thai. During the clinch phase, on the other hand, Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, Judo and even Sambo are all used. Meanwhile, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu (with emphasis on positioning), catch wrestling, shoot wrestling, Sambo and Judo determines the ground phase of this sport.

Aside from the different phases of fighting, there are also several fighting techniques that can be observed from MMA. MMA fighting techniques also use: punches, kicks, knees, sweeps, some elbowing, takedowns, pinning holds, throws, and even hand-to-hand combat. The winner for every MMA match is determined through a judge’s decision. Usually, the matches for MMA are time bound meaning decisions are made after the time for each match has passed. On other hand, there are instances wherein matches may be stopped even before the allotted time has passed, some conditions which can end a fight are: fight doctor recommendation, referee’s stoppage decision, knockout, submission, and when the cornerman finally throws in the towel.

MMA at present

Mixed martial arts at present make use of different fighting techniques, which are in fact combinations of several professional fighting styles. Most of the time, fighters in mixed martial arts are already trained in a specific fighting style and they eventually establish their careers in MMA when they venture more into other types of fighting. MMA has several fighting styles and these are: clinch-and-pound, sprawl-and-brawl, and ground-and-pound. These fighting styles are further discusses below:

  • Clinch-and pound make use of clinch fighting methods generally differentiated by a clinch hold. In this type of fighting style, the fighter holds his opponent in place making sure that they are immobilized. When the opponent is already immobilized, the fighter then will try to attack his opponent’s body using several dirty boxing moves or simple his knee. Fighters who usually use this fighting style have started training on wrestling before they ventured into other techniques like boxing.
  • Sprawl-and-brawl can be classified under the stand-up fighting approach. This kind of technique makes use of striking. Sprawl and brawl tries to avoid ground fight. Fighters who use this kind of fighting style have extensive background in kickboxing or boxing.
  • Ground-and-pound is a kind of fighting style which focuses on throwing and taking down of an opponent. This technique attempts to gain advantage by taking the dominant position and releasing several strikes.

With the seemingly limitless types of fighting combinations used in MMA, it may appear as though a fighter can do anything against his opponent. That is not the case. There are several things which MMA regulations prohibit and these are: eye gouge, head-butt, pull the hair, attack the groin, bite, etc.

Since this is a mix of multiple martial arts we get to see a combination of actions exhibited by the fighters. The two main categories are striking and Grappling. When one is offensive the other is the defensive mechanism used to counteract the actions.

Striking or Attacking Techniques:

As the title goes, here we have one player taking the initiative to attack the opponent either using kicks, knees and punches. Relating to training we could say that practicing with sand bags for boxers and MMA Pound to Pound fighters gives extra strengths in their blows.

Grappling or defensive Techniques:

These include types of hold like the clinch, pinning and submission holds and so on. This is mainly done to gain advantage over the opponent or to escape from a difficult position or strike.

As it is really difficult to set rules on fights like this, all the games follow a common rule that is accepted by the UFC. As per this rule the following acts are not allowed and may lead to disqualification.

  • Eye Gouging: In this case on of the players try to use the fingers to tear or hurt the muscle near the eye and this may lead to permanent  loss of eye sight or damage to the eye.
  • Fish- Hooking- Here again the fighter uses his hands and fingers to insert it into the mouth or the nostril to pull the muscle apart.
  • Small Joint Manipulation- There is not a complete case of fracture but then a kind of joint locking that could cause severe damage.
  • Some universal illegal techniques like Biting and striking the groin are completely banned as well.

As said before it is not possible to argue on a few actions like elbow strikes and spinal locks as it varies from one promoter to other. At the end of the day MMA Pound for pound is a game or a sport that needs to have the sportsmanship involved and should not be used to hurt or injure the opponent in any way. If it is accidental, then it is fine as accidents tend to happen but purposeful actions should be avoided and such players should be eliminated as well as it tends to affect the popularity as a sport.
